FAQ

I’m interested in staying up to date on books that you represent for screen. Do you have a newsletter?

Yes! We publish a monthly book-to-screen newsletter featuring our latest titles available for adaptation and book-related news. If you'd like to receive it, please contact us to be added to the mailing list.

I’m interested in a book – how can I find out who represents the adaptation rights?

A great first step is to check the acknowledgements page of the book, as authors often thank their literary agent, who likely handles their film/TV rights. If it’s an Australian title, feel free to reach out to Bold Type Agency – if it’s on our list, we can assist you directly. If not, we’ll do our best to point you in the right direction.

I’d like to make an offer to Bold Type Agency for an option and purchase agreement. What terms are you looking for?

Financial terms are always proposed by the producer and can vary depending on several factors, including:

  • The book’s market appeal and existing interest from other producers

  • The format you have in mind (film, limited series, ongoing series, etc.)

  • Your production budget and financing strategy.

In general, offers should outline:

  • Option Fee: A set amount paid for a specific period, with possible extension provisions

  • Purchase Price: A percentage of the production budget, payable if the project moves forward

  • Creative Vision: Your vision for the adaptation, including potential screenwriters, directors, and key talent.

Beyond financials, we’re keen to know your creative approach and potential partners, as a strong team can be just as critical as the deal structure.

If you’re interested in making an offer, we’d love to hear from you!

What types of books does Bold Type Agency represent for screen adaptation?

We represent a wide range of books across fiction and nonfiction, including adult, young adult, and children’s titles. Our list includes bestsellers, critically acclaimed works, and high-concept stories with strong potential for limited TV series, returnable TV series, cinematic feature film, documentaries, and original feature film for streamers.

If you’re looking for a specific genre or theme, we’re happy to recommend titles from our catalogue that could suit.

Can I request a reading copy of a book before making an offer?

Yes!  We’re always happy to provide a manuscript for reading.

I’m new to this – how do I get started with making an offer for one of the titles you represent?

If you’re interested in optioning a book, the best place to start is by reaching out with details about your interest, your production background, and any initial thoughts on how you’d like to approach the project. From there, we can talk through what might be possible.
