FAQ

Are you a literary agent?

No, Bold Type Agency does not act as an author’s literary agent and cannot help you find a publisher.  Bold Type Agency represents international rights and book-to-screen adaptation rights on behalf of literary agents and publishing houses.

Does that mean that you won’t work on my book?

I might! But only if you are represented by one of Bold Type Agency’s literary agent clients, or published by one of Bold Type Agency’s publishing clients.

Where can I find a literary agent?

The Australian Literary Agent’s Association has a handy list of literary agents here with links to each agent’s website which detail how to submit your work to them. Always check if an agent is open to submissions, and follow their guidelines when submitting.

What are international rights?

International rights means the markets outside of Australia and New Zealand.  Bold Type Agency works in markets from North America to Germany to Korea, pitching titles, making submissions, and doing everything we can to secure new publication deals for a title and an author.

Why should I care about international rights?

The vast majority of books will only be published in their home markets (for many, many different reasons and nothing to do with the quality of the book, the writing or the subject matter). Just like Australia has a vibrant publishing industry publishing local authors, so do many other territories. But there are also many books that can find new publishing homes throughout the world. Licensing the international rights to a new market means a new publishing contract, a new advance and royalties, and, just as importantly, finding new readers for your work.

How do I sell my international rights?

Typically, rights are sold through a literary agent a publishing house or a rights agent (like me).

What are the different types of rights that can be sold?

Some of the most common rights include English language rights outside of ANZ, translation rights, book-to-screen and adaptation rights. Each right can be sold separately.

I still have questions – can you help me?

Yes! You can book a call with Bold Type Agency to discuss anything rights-related.
